ABOUT THE SHOW

In 1938, actors from the New York chapter of the WPA’s Federal Theatre Project travel to Pikeville, Kentucky to present William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” Using the small town’s Union Hall and fleshing out the cast with local performers, this company of actors re-imagined Shakespeare’s timeless comedy into a transformative play set in an isolated coal-mining town.

With music by the Appalachian band Rev. Karl and the Pikeville Pickers, this rousing production incorporates local folklore and much of the traditional music and dance handed down from the Elizabethean ancestors of these mountain dwellers.

Robert L. Williams’ adaptation brings unexpected life to this classic tale of tragic loss, heartbreak, mistaken identity, mixed-up passion and drunken merriment. Audiences have never seen Shakespeare like this!

From the original 1938 program notes:

Currently in America fear persists, paranoia reigns, darkness rises and we face a world that sometimes feels it may break apart at its economic and political seams at any moment. So what does theatre, or Shakespeare for that matter, have to offer us? Our hope is that art and music can be light in the darkness. And that theatre, as it evolves and grows, can become a vital part of every community and help us find our way in the world.

“An Appalachian Twelfth Night” is a story of love, loss, chaos, laughter and music. This “old poetry” can become fresh and thrilling – lifting us up to bridge stories across time and bring diverse peoples to a universal understanding. Of course, all the while having some good ol’ foot-stompin’ fun.
